Food for Her Household

As soon as my husband got his new position and we knew that we would be apart during the week for the next 6 months, I knew that I wanted to prep meals for him. When deciding that this was the route I wanted to go, I started by brainstorming a list of all of the meals that we've made and that he really enjoyed. Whether it's cooked in the Crock pot, casseroles, or easy to assemble food, the list began to grow. (check it out here!)
At that, I hopped on Google Drive and I made a Google sheet which shows all of the ingredients for all of the meals that I was going to make. That way when I was ready for shopping, I could easily look at the list and know exactly what I needed for each recipe without having to look up the recipe.
Once all the meals were laid out, I planned to put them on a Google Calendar so that I can see how far in a month all these meals would go. To my surprise, the meals lasted about a month which was great because that provides a good variety of meals and hopefully my husband won't get tired of them any time soon.

In Proverbs 31:14 it talks about a woman who who brings her food from afar. I kind of giggled when I read that as I am 5 hours away from my husband and every weekend I'm bringing him food from afar. To me this was a clear confirmation that, as hard as it was going to be to make meals, it's something that God would see me set out to do. He would use me in this way to support for my husband. Now, as I'm prepping these meals I find joy in doing this because I see it as being honorable to God and honorable to my husband.

The hardest part about making these meals perfectly proportioned for him is that most recipes are meant to be served as a casserole or whole crock pot meal at once with possible leftovers. My goal was that he won't have leftovers so he won't get tired of the meals by the end of the week. For example I can make his favorite meal, Surf n' Chicken in the crock pot ahead of time. It would normally feed us both of us for a week but I can divide it into individual bags, freeze them, and then they're ready for whenever it falls again on the calendar; usually about once a month. This last time I made Surf n' Chicken, I was able to divide it into about four meals. So think about it, I make Surf n' Chicken in January and I'm feeding him Surf n' Chicken until April.

I also made a great recipe from Pioneer Woman, Pulled Pork. In her version, she used Pulled Pork for tacos. Usually we use Pulled Pork and hamburger buns for sandwiches. So her one batch of Pulled Pork, I was able to divide into several bags either Pulled Pork sandwiches or Pulled Pork tacos. Both are very different, but using the same recipe makes it very easy on me.

As I said before, I've compiled a list of all the meals that I've chosen to make for my husband and within each one you can click to find the recipe. To make it easy on all of us, like everyone else, I find my recipes on Pinterest if they're not a family recipe. So when you click on a recipe it'll take you straight to where I found it through Pinterest or on my Blog. Go ahead and pin it and give the owner the credit!

When I make the meals for the week, I visit my husband on Friday night so I make meals for the following Saturday through Friday, 7 meals total. I don't however tell him when he should eat them, I give him a suggestion or tell him what he has for the week but he can figure the rest out on his own, right :)

Some of you may be wondering "Ok, she's making all of these meals for her husband, what is she eating?" That's a great question. I actually decided to take this opportunity to get myself back into shape and lose some much-needed weight after a year and a half of happy marriage and started Nutrisystem. It's an easy way for me to eat healthy but not have to think about what I'm eating or if I'm eating the right portions. It allows me to focus on on preparing meals for my husband and and doing all the extra things that I feel I should be focusing on. As many of you know as well, it is also very hard to make healthy meals for one person. My success story so far is 14 lbs in one month!
