Many years ago, I felt God calling me to the life of teaching. It is now year 9 of building a career that I love. The classroom is a place that I can be creative and spark the interest of students to get them thinking on their own. I have learned many useful skills, but none as important as flexibility and adaptability. Each year I have taught, God has put before me a new and unique challenge. Whether that challenge be different grades, subjects, or focuses.
For a bit of background on myself, here is the flexibility God has used to shape my career. My first year of teaching, I was not only finishing my credential, but I was teaching at a small rural charter school, grades 3-12. Yes that is right, all of them! But only Math and Science...that makes it so much better right? I had groupings of 3-4 grades at a time and they rotated throughout the day. I always joked that if I could make it through that year, my first year, then I was game for anything. Little did I know that God was shaping me for all the years to come!
My second year was a little better, 6-7 all subjects. Then each year for the next 3 years I thought groupings of 3-5, 3-6, and 4-6. Each year having a new challenge. But I really enjoyed the extra push!
At that point, God decided to take me on an adventure and challenge me in my trust of his will and plan. I left my previous school and moved to the coast where I had to work 3 jobs just to stay afloat. None of which were teaching full time! I subbed mainly and learned a lot through that. Then I followed God's lead to my current job teaching 6th grade. This makes year 3 in the same grade! Yay finally! Oh wait, aren't we talking about adapting and being flexible with God's lead? You bet...my classroom is piloting technology this year, so all my great activities and plans are now going digital. Never stagnant over here!
