Feeding My Household for $50 a Week....

We all know how important it is to save money, yet why is it so hard to do when you actually can and then find yourself spending frivolously on things like groceries when you don't have too? Setting habits of eating and spending that not the healthiest or sustainable? I am the worst culprit of this, I admit it, arrest me, I'm done.

Recently we have encountered the harsh reality of going from two incomes to one.  Now I know a lot of you have dealt with that and if you are my mom, you are saying, "you will be fine" (you are saying that right now, huh Ma?).  But I want to do what I can to continue to "Feed my Household" in a healthy and sustainable way.  So in comes some different ways of doing things.  There was a season for freezer cooking...now comes the classic homemaker style of shopping weekly and eating fresh!  I'm kind of excited..I haven't lived this way in a while...ok I don't know if I ever have, I have always been a horder and bulk shopper.

Ok, let me share with you what I have learned, and then I will be sharing with you what I am doing.  First off: STAPLES.  Not the metal things for paper, or if you have ever been injured, the kind that hold your wound...ok this is about food...let's not go there...oy

8 Staple foods that should be in your house: Chicken, beans, potatoes, cheese, flour, yogurt, chicken stock, and oats.
I will share with you how I am using those along the way.  But first, let me tell you how I started this journey.  It is all about action first.
PLANNING!

  1. I did an inventory list of my food supply, fridge, freezer, pantry, spices.  Feel free to use the Simply Thirty-One Inventory List as a starting point.

  2.  I looked at only the inventory list and highlighted all the ready meals, then the meats, then the sides...and was left with the components to meals (condiments and pieces)
  3.  I then took made a Simply Thirty-One Meal Planning Calender, and wrote in those ready meals for dinners.  Let's use the stock we have!
  4.  I then used this meal planner for the week to get detailed. I thought about some sides we could have with those and looked at the inventory, and scheduled them.
  5. Ok for me that filled a week of dinners. With maybe a few things to get on the shopping list, like chicken to make the meals complete.
  6. Now I want to make my husband fresh sandwiches every morning.  Lucky for me, he always needs a cold lunch, unlucky that leftover are not doable for his lunches...so those are mine :( Anyway, I found a few pins about lunch ideas and just joined them together with what I already have and go from there.  A few sandwich types that my husband hasn't been able to have with me doing freezer sandwiches were egg salad, chicken salad, BLT, any fresh wraps with lettuce.  So those are first on my list.  Now we already had fresh bacon bits, and canned tomatoes, so I put lettuce on the list and made him a wrap!  It looked divine.  I'm also making Egg Salad right now.  Eggs are a staple, so keep lots in your house! Get fool-proof perfect, easy to peel hard-boiled eggs with this method
  7. Ok, I got off track...sorry.  Next is snacks.  I was on a weigh loss program for a while and learned the proper portions and snack ratios, so I want to keep that as a constant in my house.  Snacks high in Protein for morning, Protein and Good Carbs for afternoon, and Fun/carbs for evening. Once again, I checked my inventory and added the specific snacks to the list.  Not just making sure I had them all, making sure I use what I have before I get more.
  8. Now the shopping list.  Look at your meal calendar and just add the things to your list that you need.  Now things like milk, yes add that, but I didn't need milk this week.

Now Go Shopping!

This first week should not only be exciting...but hopefully the cheapest honestly.  I walked into the store, had my list, looked at the unit rate on everything, chose the best option of product....bought a whole chicken!  (I will share that adventure later) Knowing that I had most of what I needed made this trip quick...OH!  have that calculator out...if it doesn't fit in the $50 budget, it goes back!  Truth be told, this first trip cost be less than $30!  That doesn't mean I should adjust by budget, it just means I have supplies I need to use.

Ok so that is my starting point.  I will share all the details next time right here!  Stay tuned!  I have to go make egg salad :)

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Through the course of each week, I am doing an exhaustive study on each oil.  What better way to learn about them but to experience them, right? I am using them in all 3 ways that essential oils are experienced, topically, aromatically, and internally.  Join me in my journey of discovery.

Rise and Shine!
Diffuse 3 drops with 3 drops of Lemon essential oil.  The aroma will greet you with a Good Morning!  It is Monday, and even though I didn't have to work, yay for teaching, I still need to be up and awake for other obligations, like studying oils for you! and being a simply thirty one wife!

Summer Lifesaver
Peppermint oil causes a cooling sensation because one of its primary components MENTHOL activates the same receptor on nerve endings that are involved in SENSING COLD!
I put a roller filament straight in my Peppermint bottle.  Then I put it along the back of my neck...Summer Lifesaver!

Independence Day Macarons

What better way to celebrate our glorious Independence than to bake!  Yes I am aware that the macaron is French, but they know how to bake!  These little treats are crunchy on top and chewy in the middle, with a creamy delightful center. We are definitely in love in the Lutz household! So here are the recipes that I used on this patriotic weekend.

*For all of these, I used a silicon baking sheet with rings on them for size.  Here are a few more hints:
  • when whipping your egg whites, don't stop the mixer until you have added the sugar and you are at hard peaks
  • bang the baking sheet on the counter to eliminate air bubbles before setting for 15 minutes prior to baking
  • let silicon cool before trying to remove macarons.

2/3 cup almond flour
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp cocoa powder
3 aged egg whites

1 tbsp vanilla
Red food coloring

1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
3 aged egg whites
5 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp vanilla

Bake at 300 for 18 min

4 tbsp unsalted butter, room temp
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
A pinch of salt

Blueberry Macaron
2/3 cup almond flour
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
3 aged egg whites
5 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp vanilla
Blue food coloring

Dwarf Diamond Mine Cleaner

Truth time...I never find the time, ok obviously I just don't make it a priority to take my Wedding Ring to the jewelers to get it cleaned.  I am the worst!  And to make matters worse...I NEVER take it off...yeah that is right...never!  Some of you may be yelling at me right now, however, it probably isn't going to change...so sorry!

Ok, so now for the reason of this post, cleaning the ring, yeah the one above is dirty.  Underneath the diamonds is a nasty film of dirt and grim....I just found a fantastic way to keep my ring clean and let it "Shine bright like a diamond" all the time...sorry, had to say that.  Check it out!!!

Dwarf Diamond Mine Cleaner
2 tsp Thieves Household Cleaner
2 tsp Baking soda
10 drops YL Lemon Essential Oil
about 4 tsp water (enough to make your ring submerge)

Mix ingredients together.
Let your jewelry sit for 10 minutes.
Take an old tooth brush and gently scrub.
Rinse with water.

Let it Shine!!!

For those of you who share the passion for excellent wellness products from Young Living, this recipe is based on LavaDerm...however, it is currently out of stock, so we had to improvise for summer.

Sunset Sebastian

1/2 oz distilled water
1/2 oz Aloe Vera Juice (This is what I used)
3 drops Young Living Lavender
2 drops Young Living Peppermint
2 drops Young Living Copaiba

Wool Dryer Balls

Did you know that the most toxic thing in our homes these days are the fabric softener and dryer sheets?  Let the panic begin.  Have no fear, there is a better, natural solution, wool dryer balls.  Now you can make your own, just go search Pinterest...but after making quite a few of my own, I found a better solution.  Support a small business and get ones that are already made for you!  I got mine from here.  Great service and great products...what more can you ask for?
What is different about wool dryer balls?  The more you have in your dryer, the faster your clothes dry, saving energy and fluffing as they go.  However, if you let them run for too long once they are dry, there comes static.  These will not prevent static, but if you have a dryer that has an auto-sense* it will help you not get into the static zone.
The best part? What do you want your clothes to smell like today? Lavender, Lemon, Purification, Idaho Blue Spruce, Stress Away....put about 10 drops on one ball or spread about among them...your clothes will smell yummy!   The oils should last several loads and then reload your sent...and let them roll!

Bugs Life

Summer is here...which means a life full of bugs!  It wouldn't be bad it those bugs were like the fun and helpful ones from Disney's a Bug's Life...but they aren't!  They are down right pests.  So instead of reaching for the standard bug spray that tastes horrible and makes you hold your breath...not to mention melts plastic? Make this spray that uses essential oils to naturally repel bugs.  What? You didn't know that you can use plants to repel bugs...YOU BET!

Bugs Life: Bug Spray

Bring 1 quart of water to a boil
Remove from heat and add 1/4 oz Catnip to steep 6-8 hours.
Then add the following oils:
10 drops Purification
7 drops Palo Santo
10 Drops Digize
6 Drops Lemongrass
5 Drops Rosemary
2 Drops Peppermint

Store in a glass in the refrigerator.
Add to a glass spray bottle and apply and reapply every 30 minutes to hour.
*It may seem like a lot to reapply...but it is refreshing and smells good.  So get used to it!*
